Desktop virtualisation is the ability to virtualise the operating systems for your end user access devices and manage them centrally within the datacentre.

The current status quo within the majority of organisations is to have user operating systems installed on their PCs and laptops. The desktop operating systems are loaded onto a traditional PC’s hard drive and the computer is booted from this local disk to provide the OS to the PC user.

These operating systems then interact with the PC hardware to run local programs and also and execute programs that can be running on servers within the business. This model has been traditionally been beneficial as it has allowed programmers to take advantage of the graphical capability delivered by PC’s. However with the advent of Virtualisation infrastructure it is now possible to have nothing installed on the end user PC and still deliver the same user experience as having your operating system locally installed.
